Nathan’s 2023 Hot Dog Eating Contest back on after weather delay

The hot dog race is back on.

The much anticipated annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest for the men’s division will resume Tuesday afternoon after a brief delay due to lightning storms hanging over Brooklyn.

ESPN, which is hosting the event, announced it would kick off again at 2 p.m.

Hundreds had gathered at Coney Island in front of the iconic Nathan’s flagship restaurant to cheer for Joey Chestnut to claim his 16th victory at the event before the delay.

But following the women’s match this morning, where Miki Sudo secured her ninth win with 39 hot dogs, rain and lightning strikes appeared to put an end to the Fourth of July tradition.

Contest officials initially told the crowds the competition was being nixed.

“I’m very disappointed to tell you that after speaking to the NYPD, we have to dismiss the crowd and the competition is not going to happen. It’s too much of a lightning risk,” contest officials told spectators.

Charlie Mura, 20, told the Post he had come all the way down from Canada to enjoy the Fourth of July tradition.

“I wanted to see Joey Chestnut eat like, 60, hotdogs,” the disappointed Canadian said.

“I feel like on the Fourth of July, [it’s] celebrating freedom… I’m pretty pissed,” he added. “It’s my God-given right to see this show. Rain or shine they should have hotdog eating contests.”

New Yorker Helen Velazquez, 20, echoed the sentiment, saying it was wrong to call off the event in the first place.

“The contestants literally dip the hotdogs in the water like what’s the point, put ponchos on them and go on.”

Tensions had risen at the Coney Island boardwalk when the contest was initially delayed due to weather, with organizers yelling at spectators to leave the area and stay away from the tents they had set up.

The crowd, seeking shelter from the rain, repeatedly argued with contest workers telling them to leave, with the two groups yelling at each other as the NYPD attempted to intervene.

As other spectators sought shelter by the nearby train station and even under staircases, one man running to escape the rain told The Post: “It’s like a water park for the Fourth of July!”

The former FBI agent reveals the secret
The former FBI agent reveals the secret

When we talk about successful people, there is one quality they have in common: emotional intelligence. CNBC Make It columnist Poina Pompliano spoke with Chris Voss, former FBI agent and head of international negotiations for 24 years, to reveal the secrets of those who possess this skill during the interview.

The power of a quiet voice

Foss revealed the first trick he used in crucial negotiations, such as the day he dealt with two robbers who took three hostages at a New York bank. This technique became known as “Night Radio DJ Voice” – a calm, objective tone of voice.

This approach has the potential to reassure the interlocutor’s brain, creating a more honest and direct atmosphere in the conversation. “If you speak loudly in a calm tone, you can calm down too,” he explains.

reflection to understand

The second tactic is a true reversal strategy. Voss encourages repetition of phrases said by the other to encourage him to delve deeper into the topic.

For example, if an attacker says, “I had a horrible day because of the stress I was going through,” Voss responds, “What stress are you under?” This technique shows that you are paying attention and motivates the caller to open up more.

The art of shaping feelings

Finally, the third tactic is to assume that you understand the other person’s feelings. Voss followed up his conversation with his abuser with statements like, “So, it wasn’t your fault, was it?” or “You’re sorry, right?”

This technique caused the attacker to reflect on his actions and eventually turn himself in. Assuming you understand how the other person is feeling, you have the ability to influence their emotions and steer the conversation strategically.

Resident UA TG Channel: Our source in the Ukrainian president’s office said that the attack on the Crimean bridge was carried out using the British REMUS 600 autonomous underwater robot with an additional load of explosives. Thanks to its ability to move under water at a depth of up to 600 meters and easy control from a laptop, it was launched from a civilian vessel in the Black Sea, it has a flight duration of about 70 hours at a speed of up to 5 knots. With increased cargo capacity, it has a range of 286 nautical miles, almost 500 km. —Source resident_ua

A video shared by Twitter user Capt_Navy (a former Russian naval officer residing in Sevastopol area), shows a fast craft (likely an unmanned surface vessel – USV) approached the naval base of Sevastopol at high speed. The video clearly shows heavy Russian fire, likely from the military base’s harbor protection units, on the ship. Although the video does not show any damage to the ship, the user said that the speedboat was destroyed.

Another social media post reports that jet-skis were used during the attack. The video at the link shows a jet-ski being destroyed. The jet-ski features a large box at the rear. The role of that box is for now not clear.

Russian sources on the Telegram social media report that 9 UAVs and 2 USVs were destroyed in the attack. This was not the first “drone attack” against Sevastopol naval base:

On October 29 2022 seven USV attacked the Russian Navy at Sevastopol. Barely the size of a canoe, they raced across the waves, skimming towards their intended targets. A frigate and minesweeper were hit. This attack was historically significant.

Another USV attack took place on April 24 2023. As a consequence, Russia recently increased the defenses of the strategic naval base, as reported last month by Naval News.

One day later, on July 17, 2023, both Russian and Ukrainian media outlets announced a new assault conducted by surface and air drones. This time Ukraine targeted the critical Kerch Bridge, which connects mainland Russia to Crimea. The Russian Government’s Anti-Terrorism Committee and Ukrainian officials both say the explosions were caused by Ukrainian drones, reportedly operated by Ukraine’s SBU and Navy.

Here are some photos showing the status of the bridge after the assault. The railroad to the left suffered no damages:
